Stage Typography / Design, Experimental

This is a college project, turned out to be a complete experimental project for me. I have so much fun building every piece of this miniature stage.

The project description is “applied typography”, where you’re being asked to apply a typography design to a real object. Some examples being mentioned by the lecturer is t-shirt, posters, bags, etc. But those were too ordinary. I want to create something more interesting.

This project mainly handcrafted. I actually built the stage with wood. I printed the typography pattern on transfer paper, and transfer it to the wooden mini drums and guitars. By the way, drums and guitar miniature are one of Indonesia’s unique souvenirs. A must have one to bring home if you happen to visit this country.

Research

The pattern that is being applied on the drums is the adaptation of Javanese batik pattern called “Parang Rusak”. The picture above shows the original pattern and the closer look of the typography-pattern I recreated.
Picture below is the icon that later being used as the stage backdrop and applied on the guitar. The visual is inspired by one of the pattern that I saw on Asmat’s shield. Asmat is a tribe from Papua, Indonesia.
